The IT University of Copenhagen became an autonomous university, the 12th University in Denmark, on June 1st, 2003.

The top-most level at the ITU is the Board of Directors, which employs the Vice Chancellor, the Provost and the University Director. ITU currently has 5 sections and 11 research groups constituting one department and four administrative departments.
