The IT University of Copenhagen became an autonomous university, the 12th University in Denmark, on June 1st, 2003.

The top-most level at the ITU is the Board of Directors, which employs the Vice Chancellor, the Provost and the Head of Administration. ITU currently has seven faculty groups constituting one department and four administrative departments.
