Intentions and Scope

The intention of NWPER is to bring together researchers and Ph.D. students in the fields of programming and software development tools and techniques. NWPER intends to be an open forum with ample time set aside for panels, subworkshops and/or discussions. At NWPER'2002 there will be one or more discussants appointed for each full paper in order to provoke discussion. The workshop intends to function as a platform for establishing co-operative research projects between the participants.

NWPER addresses research on programming and software development tools and techniques in a broad sense, including tools, methods and languages for programming and software development, as well as user interfaces for, architectures for and collaboration support within programming and software development environments.

The previous workshops took place in Lund (1983), Roskilde (1986), Linkøping (1989), Trondheim (1990), Tampere (1992), Lund (1994), Aalborg (1996), Ronneby (1998), and Lillehammar (2000). Most of the participants at earlier NWPER's were from the Nordic and Baltic countries, but everyone is welcome!

Workshop Format

The workshop will include the following activities:

To facilitate discussion and make the workshop interactive, we will follow the structure the of the paper sessions from last time:

Examples of key questions asked for each paper are "What is the main contribution of this paper?", "How will this contribution improve software development practice?", "What are the main problems with the contribution and/or the paper?", "Can the contribution be expected to scale to real-life problems?". The actual questions will maybe be tailored to fit with each session.

Paper Submissions

Submit full papers (at most 16 pages) or short papers (4-6 pages are recommended) by email to kasper@it.edu before April 26 as PDF. Ph.D. students are encouraged to submit papers about their ongoing or planned research. Indicate in the email whether you are a research student or not.

All submitted papers will be reviewed by three members of the programme committee (see below.)

We plan to publish as a  Special Issue of the Nordic Journal of Computing of specially invited journal-length papers which elaborate on selected research results presented at the workshop. Similar Special Issues were published after the workshops in 1996, 1998, and 2000. We are currently investigating this option.

Demonstrations, Panels and Interactive Workshops

NWPER'2002 will include demonstrations and may include one or more panel sessions and subworkshops. In particular, the purpose of the subworkshops is to allow the participants to discuss topics of mutual interest in smaller groups. The workshops may also comprise presentations of relevant short papers.

All proposals go by email to kasper@it-c.dk.
