Product Development and Implementation: Data Life Cycle Management, DLCM.

Background: Many private companies and public institutions and organizations suffer from ever growing amounts of data gathered in their backend database systems. Many companies now keep data gathered over the past 10-20 years. The presence of unnecessarily large amounts of data has a number of unfortunale implications. The performance in retrieving data from such systems degrades significantly. The ressources needed to operate and service these data grows: More disks must be taken into use, backup takes longer time, mirroring gets more expensive, and restore in case of disk failure or server crash may take days. Moreover, the the environment suffers from the CO2 caused by hosting data in large datacenters. The hosting of 1.5 terabyte data contributes with the outlet of 1 ton CO2 each year.

Lectors product DLCM - Data Life Cycle Management provides differentiated services for data of different age in an Oracle Database. Through Oracles trademarked Partitioning technology we allow businesses and organisations to partition their tables according to a chosen data life cycle or other logical criteria. A data life cycle assigns different storage services (speed of disk, backup, mirroring, compression) to each phase in the life of data, hereby allowing businesses to be cost efficient in the operation of their data. Moreover, by efficiently cleaning up databases, by removing data that are no longer used, the outlet of CO2 from hosting data is drastically reduced.
